About the 2022 Future of Aging conference

Colorado’s first Future of Aging conference was held on June 16, 2022, in Colorado Springs. This conference brought people from all over the state, both in person and virtual, to build on the past work done in Colorado’s aging space as well as plan for the future of aging in Colorado.

An important part of this conference was to celebrate and honor sevens years of work, from 2015-22, by the Strategic Action Planning Group on Aging (SAPGA). Due to the modernization of the Older Coloradans Act (HB22-1035), updated duties and responsibilities would be put in place for the new Colorado Commission on Aging (CCOA), which was announced September 19, 2022.

This dynamic conference focused on energizing and engaging stakeholders, individuals, non-profits and businesses interested in aging issues and encouraging them to stay involved in all topics related to aging in Colorado.

The conference highlights included a presentation on Master Plans on Aging (MPA) from The SCAN Foundation focusing on what has happened across the United States in the formation of MPAs. Colorado’s senior policy advisor on Aging shared the progress Colorado has made on developing an MPA and the necessary next steps.

A representative from the state demographer’s office presented “Future of Aging Demographics” specific to senior housing, caregiving and older adults in the workforce, as well as the new AARP Livability Index.

During a special lunch event, presentations were given to recipients of the Allen Buckingham awards. This award recognizes outstanding leadership of both a volunteer and a professional working in the aging space. In addition to the awards, both recognition and prayers were offered on behalf of the thousands of older adults who lost their lives to COVID.

A segment of the conference was structured as a World Café format, engaging all attendees in moving the state forward to improve the lives of older Coloradans. After lunch, for the remainder of the day, in-person attendees spent time in small groups discussing aging topics and looking toward solutions for both large and small, rural and urban community needs.
