About the Veterans Community Living Center at Homelake

The Veterans Community Living Center at Homelake, which is located in Monte Vista, was established in 1889 as the Soldiers' and Sailors' Home, providing a peaceful home for aging and disabled Civil War veterans. Homelake, which believes in honoring its residents with compassionate, dignified care, has been preserving memories and honoring veterans from every major war in U.S. history.

The Veterans Community Living Center at Homelake offers the following services:

  • Nursing home: Our 60-bed long-term care skilled nursing home provides medical and non-medical care, including 24/7 registered nurse coverage, physical, occupational and speech therapy, social activities, and assistance with bathing, dressing and other activities of daily living.
  • Domiciliary cottages (independent living with assistance): Our 48 domiciliary cottages are available for individuals who do not require 24-hour nursing care. Medical services are provided in an outpatient clinic 11 hours a day, with emergency medical care available through the nursing home.
  • Short-term rehabilitation: Physical, Occupational and Speech therapies are available for individuals seeking to return home following a qualifying hospital stay. Therapy specialists work with each individual to regain skills and improve physical strength, endurance and aerobic capacity.
  • Other services: We offer short-term respite care when home care providers or family members are unavailable, as well as end-of-life/hospice services. In addition, all residents receive individual care plans and have access to services from physicians, a social worker and veteran service officer. Residents also enjoy the convenience of their own post office, banking services, pool hall, chapel, expansive grounds and several indoor common areas.

We are located in the beautiful San Luis Valley between Walsenburg and Durango.

From Alamosa, go west on Hwy 160 about 14 miles. Turn right/north on S. County Road 3 East at the "State Veterans Center Homelake" sign and "3E/1S" highway sign. We're about one mile up the road surrounded by tall pine trees just west of the lake. Come to the building with the double doors.
