Kinship Legal Representation Opportunities Workgroup
During the 2024 legislative session, the Colorado General Assembly passed Senate Bill 24-008, which requires CDHS to study and report back to the general assembly possible ways to support kin through brief legal services or legal representation.
As a result of SB 24-008, C.R.S. 26-6-904.5 (5)(b) states: “On or before October 1, 2025, the state department shall study and report to the general assembly the feasibility of using federal funds, including but not limited to federal IV-B, IV-E, or TANF funds, or other grant funding to provide or reimburse for the provision of brief legal services or legal representation of relative and kin caregivers.”
The Colorado Department of Human Services believes this work needs to be completed in partnership with counties, key stakeholders, individuals with lived expertise and other interested parties. In order to ensure the necessary time and ensure the necessary collaboration, this workgroup will begin meeting in September 2024 and is anticipated to meet monthly until July 2025 to discuss this topic as part of the mandated study and reporting requirements.
